Wisdom’s attributes are qualities of character rather than intellect. Wisdom is very much concerned with how we live.
Perhaps this is why the Scriptures put such a premium on wisdom.
Consider these statements from the book of Proverbs:
- Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get under-standing. Esteem her, and she will exalt you; Embrace her, and she will honour you (4:7f)
- For wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her (8:11)
- Instruct a wise man and he will be wiser still; teach a righteous man and he will add to his learning (9:9).
- For through wisdom your days will be many, and years will be added to your life (9:11)
- Know also that wisdom is sweet to your soul; if you find it, there is a future hope for you, and your hope will not be cut off (24:14).
These passages all point out the incomparable value of wisdom. No wonder the Bible encourages us to seek it and then, when we have found it, to hold it fast.
