When Jerusalem was being besieged by the Chaldeans, Jeremiah prophesied that the city would be restored. How could he be sure his prophecy would be fulfilled?
First, he knew it was the word of the Lord (Jeremiah 32:9).
Second, he prayed, ‘Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you’ (Jeremiah 32:17).
It is plain that Jeremiah had an unswerving confidence that he was serving an all-powerful miracle-working God. It was well within his power to shift a few nations around and rearrange an empire or two. Nothing was too difficult for such a God!
There are many similar passages in Scripture. When God promised Abraham a son, he said simply, ‘Is anything too hard for the Lord?’ (Genesis 18:14). Similarly, when the angel Gabriel visited Mary with the news that she had been chosen to give birth to the Son of God, he simply said, ‘Nothing is impossible with God’ (Luke 1:37).
This is the kind of confidence that we need in God. Our God is a miracle-working God. Not only can he perform miracles, but he regularly does!
